Resumo

Some unjust actions are carried out by people who understand them as right, necessary, or morally obligatory. The injustice remains hidden from the one who harms, although it may be recognized by those harmed or by third parties. The argument developed here explains this modality of wrongdoing as a cycle with three moments. Influences offer an interpreted world; an understanding formed under those influences presents the violation of another person as protection, reparation, or duty; the action so authorized can return as a new influence that reinforces the understanding that made it possible. Once formed, an understanding can come to select the sources it admits, to bind itself to the agent's belonging and self-image, and to reinterpret contrary information as confirmation of the perceived threat. Three documented episodes test the model: the attacks on asylum hotels and a mosque in England after the Southport killings of July 2024, the assault on the United States Capitol on 6 January 2021, and the invasion of the seats of the three branches of government in Brasília on 8 January 2023. In each, participants invoked a good — the protection of children, the defense of the constitution, the salvation of the nation — to authorize harm against persons who had done nothing to them. The model is defended against four objections and completed by a normative criterion that does not depend on the agent's conviction: the person affected remains a participant in a shared condition, and the consideration owed to them is not cancelled by disagreement. On that basis, the final part proposes where and how the cycle can be interrupted: at the moment of influence, at the moment of understanding, and at the moment of action, with a criminal response that arrives late, remains limited, and never reproduces the exclusion it answers.
